The political right is on a winning streak online, winning attention, the power to shape narratives and securing a majority in society. With provocative messages, emotive imagery and sophisticated communication strategies, it reaches millions of people and pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable to say. Progressive movements are increasingly falling behind. But how can we change this? How can we ensure our ideas get through, inspire people and regain the initiative in the digital sphere?
Together, we’ll develop a toolkit for powerful digital communication, connected to our activities offline and community building in both sheres: from storytelling, content production and reach strategies to building active communities. We’ll try out methods and tools first-hand and learn how to combine online campaigns with street actions and political organising. After all, good communication doesn’t end at the screen. We’ll also practise public speaking, presenting ourselves convincingly and conveying clear, powerful messages – both on camera and on stage.
Furthermore, we’ll take a close look at the mechanisms of digital platforms: how do they really work today, and which of our assumptions are outdated? Why does some content spread rapidly, whilst other content barely gains visibility? And what can we learn from successful campaigns?
Drawing on successful, progressive examples from around the world, we show how communication can inspire people and shift the balance of political power. So that we do not leave the digital public sphere to the far right.
